How to Use This Curriculum Guide
Congratulations! You are embarking on an exciting, challenging, incredibly rewarding journey with your child, your children, or your students. Treat this curriculum as a guide, it is NOT a must-do list; it is NOT a course to work through step by step.
Here at Waldorf Handwork Educators, we are keenly aware that every circumstance is different. Each parent or teacher brings different strengths to this work; each student will be met in different ways by engaging in handwork; each project, even if you follow the same instructions, will find its own unique style. Your geographic location will both provide and require differing modifications and will offer different inspiration; available supplies may limit and dictate innovation or will stimulate adaptations. For this reason, our supplies list recommends what we have found to be high quality and reliable, but we also encourage you to source local alternatives. You will find a written piece entitled ‘The Value of Natural Materials’ here in the curriculum.
Patterns and instructional videos are at the heart of this curriculum guide, and at the same time, we offer you many short-written pieces to highlight and introduce you to the foundations of Waldorf pedagogy – the why, when, how, and what of this child-centered approach to learning and the profound value of handwork in this integrated curriculum designed to fully support your child’s optimal development of head, heart, and hands.
Where to start?
The written materials are drawn from our combined 50+ years of successful teaching and studying Waldorf pedagogy and will help you navigate the challenging and joyful work of teaching. Treat this curriculum guide as a celebratory buffet – look it over, browse around until you find something interesting, then explore that for a while. It will probably lead you on to something else. Perhaps enjoy this phase of exploration before delving into the patterns and instructional videos.
We have included a wide variety of knitting patterns in this 2nd grade curriculum to meet a wide range of skills. If your child is new to knitting you may choose to start from the very beginning. Or, if your child is already comfortable with basic knitting, casting on, and casting off, they may be ready for a new challenge, and you can jump into sections 2 or 3. Here is a basic overview of the skill level for each section.
Section 1: Very Beginner Knitting
- these are great projects for children who are learning to knit for the first time.
Section 2: Confident Beginner Knitting
- these projects are for taking basic knitting skills to the next level. They are patterns that are traditionally brought at the end of 1st grade or the beginning of 2nd grade. Learn to increase or decrease by casting on or off at the beginning of a row to create more complex shapes.
Section 3: Intermediate Knitting
- ready for a new challenge! Learn to purl and create patterns with stockinette stitch. These are classic 2nd grade projects.
Section 4: Advanced 2nd Grade Knitting
- continue working with purling and stockinette as your skills advance through increasing (knit front back) and color patterning.
Section 5: Beginner Crochet
- These are basic beginner crochet projects that are traditionally brought at the end of 2nd grade or beginning of 3rd grade.
A variety of fun seasonal projects and patterns that you can sprinkle in throughout the year.
The patterns are well tested and well loved by children throughout the world. Some are traditional Waldorf patterns, known and loved for generations in Waldorf schools around the world; some are our own innovations, but all are based on the same understanding of child development and appropriate for a 2nd grader or thereabouts.
How many of these projects should we do?
Do not expect to work through all of these patterns! Even experienced teachers would be very unlikely to manage that. Remember this is a celebratory buffet, not a to-do task list which must be accomplished. Your child may well like to make a whole little family of mice, for example, or may not be interested in another of the projects. Our goal as teachers is to empower our students with a sense of delight and competence, and we know we have succeeded if our students want to do more. You will find helpful guides to selecting, introducing and pacing work with your children. Written patterns and instructions are listed with related instructional videos, and we have provided a library of basic ‘how-to’s for reference.
Where can I find help?
